I’m a firm believer in using the arts to enhance mental health! Drama, music, gardening, cooking, singing, really anything that lets you express your creativity! When we aren’t able to express ourselves creatively, it can sometimes lead to depression. When we’re creative, we have an outlet for our emotions – this helps us be present and true to our authentic self.
For me this is writing and music. When I’m driving in my car, and a song comes on that I enjoy, my mood is instantly lifted! I feel peace, presence, and joy. When I’m out with a group of people and a song comes on that everyone knows, there's a shift in the energy. People are singing and dancing, there’s this moment of joy and it feels like time stands still. This is a true example of living in the present moment.
I have always used music and writing to release stress, quiet my mind chatter, and bring me back to the present moment. If I notice that I’m obsessing over specific thoughts, replaying them over and over in my mind, I will either sing or hum. This helps to break the negative thought cycle. Yes, I sing out loud, and believe me, I’m a horrible singer. Absolutely tone deaf, which really annoys me because I love singing! But, I do it anyway (much to my family’s dismay)
Let me give you an example of how bad I am at singing. I have sung the same song for years to bring me back to the present. One day my daughter heard the song on the radio and said, “Mom, is that the song you always sing? it sounds nothing like the version you sing!” Ha! So, I’m not exaggerating when I say I can’t carry a tune!
When you’re experiencing worry or anxiety, I encourage you to sing, dance, paint, bake, garden - whatever your creative outlet may be. It’s a great way to release stress and practice mindfulness. And, who knows, maybe one day one of your beautiful creations will be on display!
When I teach my classes for children and youth, I always include a creative project. It helps me get to know the child better and understand what they’re thinking and feeling. Sometimes, children cannot express their feelings verbally, but they can articulate it through music, a picture, or writing.
We can nurture creativity in children through meditation. Meditation, spending time in nature, art projects, and imaginative play help their senses light up.
Imagination is key in child development. It’s where they learn to think outside the box, express themselves, and develop critical thinking skills. All of this boosts self-confidence! Every child is born with an imagination! Encourage imaginary play, singing, dancing, drawing, whatever catches their attention! And, if you join in on the fun you may even learn something new about the child.
Until next time…express your creativity!!
